I think most people would be happier if they had more flexibility to choose when and where they work. Sometimes that just means coming in late or leaving early without the hassle or guilt. For some, it means being able to work remotely for short periods of times.
In tech, it's common for companies to support flexible work arrangements, but it's definitely a spectrum. From flexible start times to fully remote companies, see how different engineering teams have built their culture around flexible working arrangements.
It’s safe to say we’re pioneers when it comes to building both a successful business and vibrant culture with a fully distributed team. Since day one, co-founders Wade, Bryan, and Mike worked remotely. They recognized the need to help people be more efficient at work and founded Zapier with the mission of automating tasks between apps – no code needed. Despite living in the same city at the time, they had different schedules and were bootstrapping Zapier on the side. Being able to get work done whenever, from wherever, was key. Today, we’re spread across 17 time zones in 40+ countries and are continuing to grow quickly!
We believe you can do your best work from any location and trust you to manage your schedule and workload. Folks who thrive at Zapier have a bias for action, are able to prioritize effectively (focusing on the most impactful tasks), and are thoughtful communicators. We record important meetings and are happy to work around each other’s schedules to make sure everyone’s voice is heard. You can learn more about our top tips for remote work (and how our app is making it easier for thousands of people!) here.

Our team members span different time zones and we fully embrace remote work. We try to ensure four hours of overlap every day (from 9am to 1pm PST), but otherwise, we rely on each team member to determine how, when, and where they work toward our shared goals. That said, we also have a HQ office in Marina Del Rey. If you’re visiting for a team event or live in the LA area, you can feel free to work from the office whenever it’s conducive. Prefer to work from a coworking space? We offer a stipend for that, too.
There are several passionate travelers on the team, and in the past few months, we’ve shipped features from several new countries, many coworking spaces, and even a boat!

We believe successful team members know what kind of schedules work best for them. We want every Orbit team member to be able to work whatever hours suit their needs the best. For example, Nicolas generally likes to work 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., while Josh prefers to have his mornings free and work later in the evenings (when he can also catch up with Patrick in SF). Josh also recently became a parent, so having that flexibility with his schedule is extremely important. At the end of the day, there’s no hard and fast rule for when you have to work or from where, as long as you’re getting your work done.

We’re a fully distributed team that truly spans the entire country. We have people in DC, Ohio, Colorado, California, and Wyoming to name a few places. Outside of our two standing weekly meetings (which happen in the middle of the day EST), we trust you to manage your schedule and work in a way that suits you best. A lot of communication is asynchronous, either via Slack or code comments. We’ll hop on 1:1 Zoom meetings as needed, but that’s always up to you and your team to decide when and how often. Ultimately, we believe in giving people the responsibility and freedom to move projects forward.

Even before the pandemic, we were a remote first company from day one. While we have a small studio in Brooklyn, our team is fully distributed. Team members span more than 10 states and three countries. While we are committed to building a location agnostic team, we still recognize the value in synchronous work. Everyone is online together between our shared core hours of 12PM ET and 5:30PM ET. Outside of that, everyone has the flexibility to own their schedule. For example, we have an engineer based in California who prefers to start his days around 6AM PT so that he can spend his afternoons with his young daughter. On the other side of the world, we have an engineer based in Europe who’s embraced his inner night owl and keeps core hours from 6PM to 11:30PM local time!
One of our company values is Empowerment. We empower our creators to build the Internet, and we also want to empower our team to do what they do best. We don’t want (or need for that matter!) someone looking over our shoulder all the time. We look for ways to divvy up ownership of the different areas of our codebase to give our teammates the freedom to lean into their strengths. We value leadership over management – we want our leaders to find ways to facilitate people doing their best work, instead of dictating how to do things from the top down. This enables us to be better as a team than any one person could possibly be individually.
We also encourage each person to optimize their work environment. Need a standing desk or noise cancelling headphones? We’ve got you covered. We extend home office credits to each person – which are yours and yours to spend. And you can use them exactly as you see fit. Molly, our senior brand designer, wanted a beautiful lamp for her desk. Marya, our people operations manager, really wanted a filing cabinet.
Universe is also a welcoming place for parents – as well as people who are looking to grow their families. We recognize that everyone’s path to parenthood is different, which is why we offer a flexible parental leave for all new parents – this means parents of both biological children and adopted children as well as both birth- and non-birth parents. Whether you want to take more time off in the beginning or prefer to spread it out over the course of several weeks or months, we’ll coordinate closely with you to make a plan that meets your individual needs. Want to pick up your child from school or attend a dance recital? Great! Let’s make it happen. We want you to succeed both as a team member at Universe AND as a parent.
Spending time together is important too. As it’s becoming safe to travel in the US again, we are starting to plan our first post-pandemic in-person offsite! (Wait, as a fully remote team, maybe it should actually be called an onsite?! :) We’re super excited to bring the full Universe team together, especially as this time around there are many new team members who have never met IR before. We currently do online offsites about once a quarter, and prior to the pandemic, we did annual in-person offsites for brainstorming, strategizing, and goal-setting, as well as getting to know each other beyond the screen. We can’t wait to do that again.

If you live in Boston or San Francisco, we have flex office space for folks to collaborate in-person however often they’d like. That said, we fully embrace remote work. Our product encourages users to leverage technology to break distance barriers and get work done at record speeds, and the same goes for us. Amazing progress can happen from anywhere and being remote-first also opens the door to even more talent. In addition to a home office stipend, we give everyone who joins the team a budget to choose the specs for their Macs, from the desired size and memory storage down to their color preference.
While we aim to overlap from 9am-1pm PST, we’re flexible and we have a good mix of early birds and night owls on the team. For example, Valentina, finds she’s in her prime creative time when working in the evenings after dinner and makes sure to schedule emails so she’s mindful of teammates’ time zones. Kyle has been known to take advantage of skiing on a weekday morning when the lift lines are small and working a half-day on the weekend when, you guessed it, the slopes are crowded. Valentina also worked from a different city each week for a month and took some Fridays off to hit the summer wedding circuit. In other words, if you want to take time to run an errand, enjoy a hobby, pick up the kids from school, or whatever the case may be, we fully support that! We recently had our first formal offsite and hope to gather at least once a year to have time to connect in-person as a company.

Patient engagement platform tailored to underserved people groups
Remote (Global - Requires Overlap with EST)
We’ve been a fully distributed, global team since 2019 and are big fans of having the flexibility to get work done from wherever you are, whenever suits you best. Our strong documentation culture ensures everyone has context and access to the information they need. This begins with a robust onboarding process, where we have weekly rubrics outlining what we expect new hires to be learning, starting from their first day through week eight.
The emphasis is always on delivering consistently, not the number of hours you’re in front of your computer. Want to go to the gym during the middle of the day? You’ll be in great company since several team members do so regularly. Another one of our engineers is in a golf league, so he leaves early once a week to hit the links. While we strive to overlap between 10am and 2pm EST to allow for synchronous meeting times and collaboration, we’re flexible and don’t expect you to be available on Slack all the time. We simply ask that you communicate with the team so we’re all on the same page.

Given the pandemic, we’ve shifted to a hybrid in-office/remote policy. We’re being intentional about ensuring it works for everyone and aren’t afraid to experiment and make changes as needed. For instance, we have a quarterly “convergence week” where the entire company is encouraged to come together for quarterly planning and - maybe more importantly - fun team events that help colleagues connect with one another as humans with interests and lives beyond PicnicHealth. Plus, functional or project-based teams have the autonomy to plan onsite retreats or design sessions, and do so at different cadences.
Aside from standups and biweekly sprint-plannings and all-hands meetings, we do our best to avoid regular, mandatory meetings. We stay in tune with what everyone is working on through our biweekly demos. Instead of meeting to tell everyone what we’re currently working on, we spend time showing what we’ve built (Show and Tell is still as exciting as it was when we were younger!). Engineers demo their new features, Ops showcase their new models, and our Commercial team shares new partnerships. We understand that you have commitments outside of work and individual needs with regards to working hours. As long as you’re getting your stuff done, do what works best for you.
Last but not least, we provide an unlimited PTO policy. Working at a startup can be intense at times and we want to ensure that you are taking the time you need to recharge. We believe that being your best self at work requires that you are committed to taking care of yourself and taking time to get away.

San Francisco, New York City, or Remote (US)
Our team is spread across the U.S., with clusters in the Bay Area, New York, and LA. We’re mostly hiring within the contiguous U.S. but we also have team members who work from Hawaii. If you do need a H-1B visa or a green card, we’ll help with immigration requirements so we can give you peace of mind. In fact, our CTO personally spent the time with USCIS to get our second engineer, Sean, here from Ireland.
Given the varying time zones, flexibility is baked into our culture. We have a company-wide all hands every Monday and engineering team meetings fortnightly on Fridays. We’re also sensitive to meeting fatigue, so we keep Wednesdays free of internal meetings.
As a distributed team, we span several time zones and don’t expect you to be green on Slack 24/7. We are mindful about our varied working hours and will gladly move a meeting or record it if someone can’t attend. In general, our meeting cadence is fairly light. We have a weekly team alignment meeting on Monday and then a wider alignment meeting (around 15 minutes) where one person from each team joins to give updates on what everyone is working on. These are documented in written form so you can always catch up on your own time if you can’t make the meeting. There’s also a monthly all-hands meeting where our founders share their thoughts and answer any questions. Outside of our limited weekly meetings and on-call schedule, we trust engineers to manage their own schedules and fulfill their work responsibilities.
In addition, we offer a $500 work-from-home stipend, which can be used for a coworking space or office setup. While we’re great at working asynchronously, we also value getting the team together in-person. We aim to have an offsite at least once per quarter and sub-teams like engineering or product also have their own offsites to get together to work and play.

Our offices in San Francisco, New York, and Kathmandu span different time zones, so flexibility is inherently part of our culture. We don’t micromanage schedules and trust people to get their work done when it suits them best. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve been able to adjust our working styles as needed. Currently, we have a hybrid office/remote approach with some fully-remote periods, a general 2-day-a-week in-office cadence, and quarterly full-team off-sites. We’re figuring it out together.
Building on a robust technical infrastructure, we tend not to work from a place of crisis and chaos. That means that vacation time is not only possible, but required: in fact we insist on everyone at Reduct taking at least 10 days off per year, and allow up to twice that amount. We strive to create the conditions where everyone can do their best work – including outside the office. Whether it’s tending to a family, exhibiting art works, or maintaining a Twitter reputation, we believe in respecting the individuality and private life of our team.

We’ve a remote-first culture, and our team is distributed across the United States. There’s a (dog-friendly 🐶!) HQ office in Brooklyn and working space in San Francisco, but you’re not required to work from an office if you prefer not to. (You should take a minute to check out our full team, including our furry mascots.)
As long as you’re getting your work done and going to meetings you agree to attend, we trust you to manage your schedule. We’re very active in Slack and use Zoom for virtual meetings. We’re mindful of each other’s working hours and don’t expect you to be constantly available.
We all have hobbies and interests outside of work, and our flexible working hours ensure that we can enjoy them! Some of our team members are active gamers; others enjoy soccer, competitive dancing, and other recreational sports. We even have a teammate who DJs on the weekend – Chanice! We also have many fun Slack channels dedicated toward creating community around our hobbies and interests.
Lastly, Propel is a great place to work for parents since we offer 16 weeks of paid parental leave along with flexible hours.
We work across every time zone in North America – most people work online between 9am and 6pm in their local time zone. Ultimately, we care more about the impact we make than the number of hours we put in.
At Aptible, we praise focus, seek leverage, and plan our work to make the biggest impact with the least amount of precious time. Sleep is leverage: We believe in getting enough of it. Health is leverage: We take pride in our physical and mental health benefits. It will take years to reach our most ambitious goals, so we aim to perform at a high level over a long period of time.
Think about something you've wanted to accomplish but simply haven't found the time for. Working remotely adds a few more hours into the "life" part of the equation, whether it’s being able to learn a new language, take your dog for a midday stroll, or have more quality time with loved ones.

We are a remote-first company, and we’re open to global hires as long as they work in a U.S. time zone. Our founders are not co-located and we don’t have a “headquarters” office or implied hierarchy of geography. In fact, most of our founding team came from companies that were remote-first prior to 2020.
We care about results, not hours, which means our work naturally ebbs and flows over time. Sometimes we stay online later to unblock a teammate or a customer. In general, we want everyone on the team to maintain a sustainable and predictable schedule – whatever that means for them.
We aim to strike a balance between synchronous and asynchronous communication. We don’t have a meeting heavy culture and bias toward more deliberate written documentation. However, we ensure there is time zone overlap on the team to hop on a call to work something out rather than get buried in lengthy Slack threads.
Since we’re remote-first, we know we have to be more deliberate about spending time getting to know one another as people. We set aside time every week to do fun, thought-provoking icebreakers (“Aliens have landed on earth. Who do you call to represent humanity?”), and we do silly things like play board games and make wagers that end with us wearing banana costumes. Dan, our CEO and co-founder, shares some of his favorite ice breakers and more about how we foster a great remote-first culture in this blog. We also try to get together in person a few times a year and you can read about how we made our Seattle meet-up fun, productive, and inclusive here.
If any of this resonates with you, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Modernizing the PropTech supply chain
Phoenix (Gilbert), AZ or Austin, TX or Remote (US/Canada)
Our success is dependent on a culture of aligned values and expectations surrounding availability, communication, teamwork, and transparency.
While most of our team works from the office in Arizona, we are open to hiring people across the country and believe in working as if everyone’s remote. All team huddles are done via Zoom and teams make a conscious effort to incorporate every individual on the call, regardless of location. If the entire team can’t meet, or if the audio quality is bad and one person can’t hear, we won’t have the meeting.
Outside of team meetings, we are extremely flexible with our schedules and want you to get your work done in a way that suits you best. For scheduling and cross-team efficiency, Sibi has core work hours of 10:00 am to 3:00 pm PST, but outside of that, team members have flexibility on how they complete the rest of their workday. For example, Charlie plays tennis around 8:30 am a couple days a week, heads home, showers (hopefully), and jumps on his morning standup meeting. Whatever your passions and hobbies are outside of the office, we want you to lead full lives and have the flexibility to manage your own schedule.
While we emphasize asynchronous work as much as possible, we also realize it’s beneficial (and fun) to spend time together in person. We welcome remote employees to spend a week in the office once a quarter (or on a cadence that works best for them). Ultimately, whether you work in the office or remotely, you are part of the Sibi family.

What distinguishes us at Jane is that we’re truly a cohesive team comprised of good humans. While our HQ is in Santa Cruz, we also fully embrace remote work and are hiring across the U.S. and Canada. Bonus: compensation isn’t dependent on location! We try to align with Pacific Time as much as possible, but we’re flexible and respect each other’s working hours. Some like to begin their day at 8:30am while others sign on at 10:14am for 10:15am meetings. We trust our team members to get their work done however suits them best. Once a quarter, we have Jane Green Days, where we cancel all meetings and can have heads-down time.
Some of us in Santa Cruz get together to surf (Pleasure Point is just half a mile down the road), play music, and the list goes on. At the beginning of the pandemic, we started a bi-weekly trivia happy hour over Zoom, which has been a great bonding experience and continues today! Our friendships extend beyond work, and we think that speaks to how bonded we feel as a team. It’s akin to being on a sports team really.
Our interviews are purposefully designed to be as human-centered as possible and we’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback: “That was unlike any onsite I’ve ever experienced!” is a common refrain. We have candidates meet with as many team members as possible, from engineering and design, to C-suite execs, to get a feel for what it’s really like to work here. The more exposure you have to the people at Jane, the better. After all, you’re not just interviewing for a job, you’re joining a team.
Everyone pitches in to get things done and we feel collective ownership for what we’re building. All accomplishments are co-accomplishments. 🙌

We’ve grown from 20 to 185 employees and from seed stage to Series C during the distributed workforce era and have genuinely embraced a remote-first culture. Although we maintain a headquarters in San Francisco, the majority of our employees are remote across the U.S. and Canada. We have folks in California, Hawaii, New York, Oregon, Texas, Washington, and North Carolina, to name a few places and we’re committed to creating a great work environment for all employees – regardless of their preferred work arrangement.
What does this mean? All of our team communication and meetings happen via remote-friendly channels like Slack and Zoom. Teams are free to meet periodically on-site in San Francisco for working sessions, project kickoffs, or just to have the chance to connect. We also host regular remote-inclusive activities such as regular virtual happy hours, bi-weekly tech-talks and product demos as well as in-person team or company-wide offsites in fun locations like Sonoma or Las Vegas. This flexibility is great for folks who are growing their families, too. In fact, Maura, our Chief Marketing Officer, shares her experience on finding balance in her career and as a parent here. To support new parents, we offer several benefits such as the first week of meals on us (7 days of free meals; $100 max per day) and a night nanny service (team members may be reimbursed for a one-week night nanny; $1,000 max per day).
And last, but certainly not least, we compensate all of our employees the same regardless of their location – equal pay for equal work!
